Homework #2

1.Death and Funerals

a. Do you have any international friends or a host family? If so, how would you express your condolences to them if a family member died? If not, then how would you express consolences to an American host family if their Grandmother died?b. Have you ever been to a foreign funeral?

Answer:
I actually had an experience of this situation. I have a host family in America and my host mother's mother(Host grandmother for me) suddenly passed away after about six months after I got back from America. Host grandmother was such a nice person and i could not believe that she passed away. Nobody would have thought that she would die in her age. She was still young, maybe aroud 65 or so. My host family sent me a funeal invitation card along with the introduction's of her and her life. I could not attend the funeral so i sent the message to my host family that i felt really sorry about that and told them how much i loved her.

b.Have you been to foreign funeral ?
No, I've never been to foreign funeral but when i was in Germany, i visited the cemetery and it changed the image of the cemetery or grave. In Japan, we visit the cemetery just to pray for the ancestors, so usually we go there twice or few times in a year. However, in Germany, cemetery is not only the place for pray but also the place to relax. Some people siting on the bench and reading, or the other people visit there to look aroud. When I visited the cemetery in Germany, it was a pretty sunny day, so i felt so relaxed to be there and probably i would never thought that when i visited the one in Japan.

The language of Clothes (preparation for next weeks topic):

a.Why are Japanese designer label crazy? Why is what you wear so important?
I don't know what the quetion's mean. When and why do you feel Japanese designer label crazy? I don't think Japanese designer label crazy, it's just a bussiness.

What to wear is important for me, because it's one of the expression of myself. What to wear each day is depending on how i feel or where to go on that day. I choose casual clothes when i go to school and i choose more dressy clothes when i go out with my friends. It's fun to choose clothes.

b.What does “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” mean to you?
Not to judge people what they wear. The first impression of new people is from the apperance and it's includes what they wear. However we cant tell what kind of personality they have just by their clothes. It's important to talk and have a communication with them. I tend to, not judge but check what people wear, bucause i like the fashion, even though i am not fashionable, but i should keep remember that it's just one of their style and i cant tell them by clothes. I should try to have a communication with them.

Homework #1

1. Reflecting about today's class
Today we discussed about the Japanese concept of "wrapping." Do you agree with the web site's description? What do you do that can be called "wraping"? Give examples and reasons for your action.

Answer:
I'm sorry i didn't attend that day's class, so I am not able to answer whether i agree with the web site's description's or not. My opinion's of wrapping in Japan is I think Japanese people love wrapping. I think it's sometime too much. For example, when you buy some sweets like, cookies, they wrap every single cookies. I think it's waste of the resource and now we have some problems with enviroment, so I think overwrapping is not good for the enviroment and we should think about that.

2. Preparation for the next class

a. Where do you go when you die ?
I think, when I die, I go either hevean or hell. I've never studied the life after we die, but my kindergarden was Buddism kindergarden and I've heard that we'll go heaven or hell after we die from teachers, that's why i think i believe I'll go heaven or hell after I die.

b. Explain why Japanese have death memorial services 1month, 1 year, 3 years, 7years after personal death ?
It's the Buddism thing. According to the website http://www.e-butsuji.jp/, they do a memorial services not only to pray for the souls of the dead person but also the chance to think about yourself and the Buddism. In Buddism's belief, they have metempsychoisses and after 49 days from someone's die, he/she is choosen whether what he/she will be in next life. People of their family have to pray for dead person to go to hevean, that's one of the reason why in Buddism , we have death memorial services in 1year, 3years , 7 years and so on.
